Browsing

You can browse evaluations within Faculty of 1000 Biology, grouped by Faculty and then by Sections within each Faculty.

Faculties & Sections

Clicking on each Faculty will reveal its list of Sections and enable you to narrow your browse to a specified subject area.

Sort Bar
Papers are initially listed chronologically, but the sort bar gives you the option of sorting the papers by F1000 Biology Factor (rating), classification (eg Technical advance), chronology, number of selectors, and time span.

Rating badge

Faculty members assign to each paper they select one of three ratings: ‘Exceptional’, ‘Must Read’ or ‘Recommended’. These are used to calculate the F1000 Biology Factor and consensus rating. Faculty members also classify each paper according to the type of scientific advance: New Finding, Technical Advance, Interesting Hypothesis, Important Confirmation, Controversial Finding, Refutation or Novel Drug Target.

While browsing, clicking on the title of an article pulls up this page, which shows all the comments and classifications which that article has received from Faculty members. Comments from Faculty members are structured, and the aim is to have the first sentence intelligible to a general biology audience.

You can customize your own ‘My F1000 Biology’ page by specifying your favourite subject areas, Faculty Members, and stored searches.

You can also opt to receive regular email-updates on the most recent and important papers that meet your My F1000 Biology criteria, and you can choose the frequency of your email alerts: weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.


The Top 10 Lists

Faculty of 1000 Biology has three types of top 10 lists, including the Current Top 10, which lists the top ten most highly rated papers - in All of Biology, as well as within each Faculty. One of the most popular features of the site is the Hidden Jewel Top 10 list, which highlights interesting papers from less obvious journals.

In addition to offering a convenient 'Quick Search' box, Faculty of 1000 Biology also provides an Advanced Search form to meet the needs of expert searchers.

Using Boolean terms and connectors, you can enter your search request in the text box provided, select the subject categories you want to search and the date range to include. You can also search by journal name, author name, Faculty Member name and importantly, limit your search to either ‘Exceptional’, ‘Must Read’ or ‘Recommended’ papers or by the different F1000 Biology classifications.
