PubMed Linkout and Faculty of 1000 Biology

PubMed's linkout system makes it possible to search PubMed while displaying links to Faculty of 1000 Biology for any article that has been evaluated.

One simple way to do this is to bookmark the following link to PubMed:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=F1000

For the duration of your PubMed search session, Faculty of 1000 Biology links will then be displayed. It is also possible to turn on F1000 Biology links in PubMed in a more permanent fashion as follows:

  1. For individuals
PubMed’s My NCBI service allows you to set up a username and password, associated with your personal linkout preferences. Simply add Faculty of 1000 Biology (linkout provider name: F1000 Biology) to your cubby and you will always see Faculty of 1000 Biology links whenever you are logged into PubMed.

  2. For institutions/libraries
Many libraries make use of PubMed's linkout system to provide links for their library holdings.

A library can set up its holdings file as part of linkout, and then activate links to those the fulltext of those holdings by providing users with a PubMed link of the form:
    e.g.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=medlib

In order to display Faculty of 1000 Biology links too, simply add ‘F1000 Biology’ into the list of holdings files to be displayed:
    e.g.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=medlib,f1000

By the way, don’t forget to ensure that your main library linkout holdings file includes all of BioMed Central’s open access research journals (full downloadable list).

There are two ways to search F1000 Biology using PubMed MeSH headings

  1. Set up PubMed linkout for your institution (see above). Then search PubMed restricted to F1000 Biology by searching for loprovf1000 [filter] within PubMed.

  2. Use the "PubMed on F1000 Biology" option in F1000 Biology's Advanced search (http://www.f1000biology.com/search/pm/advanced) and tick the checkbox to restrict the search to F1000 Biology (bottom right of the shaded search box). You can then use the full power of PubMed search syntax (e.g. MeSH searching etc.) in the drop-down menus to the left of each blank search field. NB This approach will require knowing the appropriate MeSH headings (i.e. rather than being able to browse the headings and see all the possible subheadings).
